Evaluation of Thermal Comfort and Moisture Management Properties of Polyester–Spandex Yoga Sportswear

Abstrak
Thermal and moisture management properties are important considerations in the selection of fabrics for yoga apparel because they influence the wearer's physiological comfort during physical activity. This study evaluated the thermal comfort characteristics of four commercially available polyester-spandex yoga sportswear fabrics with different fiber compositions and fabric construction properties. Air permeability, liquid moisture management, thermal resistance (Rct), and water-vapor resistance (Ret) were evaluated using standardized testing methods. Moisture management characteristics were assessed using a Moisture Management Tester, while Rct and Ret were determined using a sweating guarded hot plate. The results showed differences in thermal and moisture management characteristics among the investigated samples. The fabric containing 86.06% polyester and 13.94% spandex exhibited favorable moisture management performance, achieving Grade 5 for the accumulative one-way transport index (AOTI) and overall moisture management capacity (OMMC). Meanwhile, the 91.13% polyester–8.87% spandex sample exhibited the highest air permeability and comparatively low thermal and water-vapor resistance. These findings demonstrate that the thermal comfort performance of yoga sportswear should be evaluated through multiple fabric properties rather than fiber composition alone. The study provides material-level evidence that can support the selection and development of polyester-spandex fabrics for thermally comfortable yoga apparel.
